Intro to AshtangaThese classes are carefully designed to introduce beginners to this classical form of Yoga in a safe, supportive way. We begin with the classical breathing techniques and movements which are the core of this approach to Yoga. The original sequence of Primary Series is broken down in the same way that Sri Pattabhi Jois broke it down in the early 70s while teaching the very first western students. These classes are designed for anyone who has the desire to learn yoga. The Ashtanga sequences make it easy for students to develope a personal practice and give a fundamental understanding that can be applied to all yoga. All of our classes are noncompetative and generally include people of all ages. Level IIIn this class the aspects of rhythm and internal heat are introduced. Here we begin to link the postures together with breath and the technique called vinyasa. The things learned in Level I are put to very good use. After learning the fundamentals, people with backgrounds in physical fitness and active lifestyles will be comfortable with this level of practice right away. Intro to Primary SeriesPrimary Series is the culmination of the of the previous two levels. This class follows the sequence of Primary Series, but takes some time to work on the more difficult areas. Primary SeriesThis is the classical Primary Sequence taught in many places around the world. Previous yoga experience is recommended for this class. Here we begin to breath with great precision and learn to practice without missing a single breath. Primary series is the "original recipie" that has directly influenced many other forms of yoga. When a student becomes fluent in these postures, there is a strong foundation and the student is assured of having enough knowledge to practice on their own. Knowing this sequence also enables students to participate harmoniously in other Ashtanga classes all over the world.
Intro to Second SeriesThis the the 2nd or Intermediate series in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Please do not confuse it with Level II! The postures here are more demanding than the postures in Primary Series, although some of them are introduced much earlier in other styles of yoga. This will be a slow, gentle introduction to the new postures with variations taught so that everyone can approach the more difficult postures safely.
Second SeriesThis is a more fluid version of 2nd series with standing vinyasa between postures. This class teaches how to practice the Intermediate postures in a flowing, beautiful way. Mysore ClassMysore class is a traditional format for teaching. Mysore is a town in South India where Ashtanga Yoga is taught. In this class the teacher works with each person individually and everyone is allowed to do their own individual practice. This approach teaches students to memorize the sequences very quickly. Also there is no need to try to keep up with the class. It may sound a little daunting to beginners, but this is actually a very comfortable way to learn. You will receive a lot of individual attention at first and then you can look at diagrams and practice the postures carefully under the watchful eye of an experienced teacher. For those who already know the sequences these classes offer a great freedom to move at your own pace. The hour before dawn is the traditional time for yoga practice. All levels of students are welcome in these classes.
Advanced AThis is the real deal. Advanced Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is one of the most beautiful disciplines. This class is extremely difficult. You should check with us before coming if you have not attended before. We do not hold people back, but we are concerned that everyone has a good experience and can still walk the next day. Being "in pretty good shape and having done a few yoga classes" is not nearly enough for this class.
Hot Vinyasa FlowThis class will be heated to 90 degrees. The heated room will encourage and enhance flexibility, while preventing injury. The heat also allows one to experience the fullest benefits of detoxifying the body. We will begin our Holistic Fitness program by activating our chi energy at the core of our body with a variety of crunches. Core strength is very important in protecting the body throughout our yoga practice. Then we will explore various vinyasa sequences that will encourage the mind to unwind, the body to unravel, and the heart to open. This is a High Intensity Interval Training, which means we will strengthen the cardiovascular system as well as the immune system, and the metabolism. This medatative practice instills self-discipline and concentration. Hot Vinyasa Flow classes are both challenging and rewarding. We will offer modifications for the beginner all the way up to the experienced yogi! Special Note: Please bring a towel and a bottle of water to this class.
Biomachanics of YogaA class to bring more awareness to what components of movement make certain postures. The Sanskrit word, asana, is defined as seat or posture. My friend Doug Keller defines asana as an "easy seat." Learning the components of an individual asana creates the intention of finding the "easy seat." This class borrows from many different sources: yoga, martial arts, Feldenkrais, and principles of mechanics from practicing Muscle Activation Techniques and other continued education in the therapy field.
