All classes are held at the Ashtanga Yoga Studio, located at 329 White Street, next to Victoria's Pasta, on Campus Corner near the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

Private Classes Available


Level One

Never tried yoga before? Not even sure what it is? Even if you have done yoga before, this class is a good place to start. Here we teach the basics of combining breath and movement, with focus on correct alignment from the beginning. While working gently within personal boundaries, students will learn the fundamental movement patterns which are the first steps in learning Ashtanga Yoga.

Level Two

In this class the aspects of rhythm and internal heat are introduced. Here we begin to link the postures together with breath and the technique called vinyasa. People with backgrounds in physical fitness and active lifestyles will enjoy Level Two.

Primary Series

Previous yoga experience is recommended for this class. Primary is a hot, sweaty class. Here we begin to breath with great precision and learn to practice without missing a single breath. Aspects of strength, endurance, concentration and deep structural alignment are introduced. This is the classical primary sequence taught in many places around the world.

Mysore Class

Mysore class is a traditional format for teaching. Mysore is a town in South India where Ashtanga Yoga is taught. In this class the teacher works with each person individually and everyone is allowed to do their own individual practice. This approach teaches students to memorize the sequences very quickly. Also there is no need to try to keep up with the class. It may sound a little daunting to beginners, but this is actually a very comfortable way to learn. You will receive a lot of individual attention at first and then you can look at diagrams and practice the postures carefully under the watchful eye of an experienced teacher. For those who already know the sequences these classes offer a great freedom to move at your own pace. The hour before dawn is the traditional time for yoga practice. All levels of students are welcome in these classes.

Advanced

We call this class "advanced" in order to avoid any confusion. This the the 2nd series in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. The postures here are more demanding than the postures in any of the other classes. Students who are familiar and comfortable with Primary Series are welcome to join this class. It is best to ask one of the teachers before attending our Advanced class.

Yoga for Athletes

This yoga class is for athletes of all kinds. Most athletes are challenged in the area of flexibility. It is well known that longer, more flexible muscles perform better and are less likely to be injured during competitive activities. However this aspect of fitness is often overlooked. Ashtanga Yoga is an extremely effective way to improve flexibility, as well as strength and structural alignment. This is a rigorous approach to yoga that athletes can appreciate and relate to. By combining stretching with deep breathing and movement, Ashtanga Yoga generates heat and sweat. This class focuses on the hamstrings, hips, and lower back. Yoga also helps to improve concentration and relieve stress. This can also play an important role in sports. Ashtanaga Yoga teaches fixed sequences of yoga postures. Once these are memorized you have a powerful tool for maintaining flexibility.
